Oh, this sounds hard. You are doing a great job and you are right, you are teaching him a great lesson in being balanced and showing that you need to take care of yourself sometimes.
Right on Susan! WOW----a lot of insight here! Yes, he needs a happy healthy mom that can teach him to live a life that is fullfilling, caring and also has boundaries. He will learn from you how to create his happiness and create a healthy life. Thank you for sharing!!
Susan, It is so hard not to want to make our children happy all the time and save them from all the discomforts of the world. But I have had to find out the hardway that to save them and shortening their pain only cheats them of being strong self-reliant adults. They will respect you more for modeling that sometimes the long hard way and doing things that we don't like(eating our veggies) makes us stronger when life really gets tough and we can stand on our two feet and make confident decisions. I would rather know that someday that my children will look back and remember that wow my mom was so good at making decisions and I can do that too. It is all about self-care and modeling our own value that I believe will make all the difference. He may appreciate the newness of his step-mom. BUT YOU are MOM. Nothing can ever change that. He will always defer to you. You sound like you are doing a great job, keep making strides.
Not sure if this is the best place to place this article but it is worth sharing!

Just about anything works. Walking around just feeling guilty
Thinking woulda, shoulda, coulda - but did nothing. And beating myself up for it!
I don't have the dedication,or will power
I have too many lists. Or not enough lists. Or no list, where is my list? Did I make a list?
Okay, where to begin. Using excuses began when I was in grade school. So, I've been professionally excusing for quite a while now. Fear is the greatest reason. I gave birth and gave excuses why I wasn't ready. I was more than happy to have Kyle hang in there a little longer. He's 14 now so I could be on Discovery Channel's "Most Extreme Pregnancies." After I got through that birthing thing and brought the young master home; I finally settled in to what needed to be done. This should have been the perfect opportunity to begin anew as my husband and I were moving on a new path. Happened again when I gave birth to twins. This situation was a tad different. Way too much medical information there but suffice to say I have a great looking scar and when I look at it..A. reminds me to look into tummy tuck surgery or B. so happy I have Matt and Colin. Again another good reason to strike while the coals are damn hot. Bit the big one and gave in to the damn word. I'm pushing myself to get motivated. I mean look at how long it took me to reply to this thread. Its one task at a time and trying to be mindful that these things are not going to kill me. Oh how happy I will make me when I get out of bed and do everything on the list and not grumble and give in to excuses.
not enough time, not enough money, its hard, i just dont want to!
