Profile Information

Tell us a little something about yourself.
I'm a graduate student, aspiring Public Relations professor and Examiner.com writer who is the mother to a four year-old boy and 15 month-old girl. I'm a former DC Capitol Hill staffer and communications director who landed in this area about three years ago. I'm a life long runner and taught spinning and boot camp for a few years. I know it's a stereotype, but I really do like to bake chocolate chip cookies and apple pies, and darn it -- I'm good at it!! I'm also convinced that the amount of Law and Orders I have seen qualify me to practice law in NYC.
What would you like to change or improve?
I am the classic competitive overachiever who wants it all, and wants it all right now. This isn't all bad except when I find myself overly frustrated or find myself falling "out of balance."
I would like to spend more time being happy with myself for where I am on my journey versus falling into the over critical trap of ruminating on what I'm not doing excerise-wise, parenting-wise or growth-wise.
What are your 3 main goals in this area?
Enjoying all parts of the journey more

Creating more realistic expectations and focusing on what I've done well versus what I could have done (though continuing to pursue challening goals and opportunities).

Truly appreciating this time with young children and sometimes this means "doing less" and just "being" more
How can others help you to achieve your goals?
Hearing from women who have started businesses or changed careers while staying-at-home would be very helpful. Often, I find that others have faced similiar challenges, especially as it relates to getting a business up and running. Many times, I've heard that these things "just take time." I have to remember that I am far from the only woman who has continued to work on her career while taking care of little ones, but sometimes the isolation of doing this from home can make it seem like you are.

H: What makes me HAPPY?
Again, sterotype, but my children and husband really and truly do make me happy. Ok, please don't gag as they aren't the only things, but I really do enjoy being a mother. Here's a less sugar-sweet list of things that make me happy.
1. A great day surfing (the ocean, not the web)
2. Finding a perfect moisturizer
3. Getting to watch my favorite TV shows all by myself
4. When I make it through pilates without crying
5. Engaging in an academic/geeky conversation about communications theory, politics or American history (did I mention I'm a nerd?)
6. When the Maryland football or basketball team win
7. Hot coffee and the perfect pastery on a cold day
8. My husband's crab dip
9. Bringing a really cool story to my readers
10. Waking up at the crack of dawn the day after Thanksgiving to stand in line at Toys R Us with my dad.

So many more....
O: What am I OPTIMISTIC about?
Showing my daughter that a woman can be a great mother while working on her own personal future.

One day getting a similiar response from my son as Suzy did: "My mommy teaches me that my dreams can come true."
Teaching
T: How am I TAKING ACTION?
Joining Beyond the Bus Stop. Continuing my graduate studies and continuing to meet new people ....

Hi Erin--

GREAT to see you tonight! Your insight about failure was so interesting---It helps put it in perspective historically for sure. You have so much to offer and I am always excited to hear about your journey to getting where you are with your dream to be a professor.

HI Eryn, have you checked out the "Work from Home" link under "What's New" on the right hand side of your screen? With you experience in fitness, this would be a great opportunity for you! I love being given the chance to help others improve their health and fitness while earning an income AND still being a stay-at-home mom to my boys!! Check it out and let me know what you think!

Love your profile Eryn. You challenges and goals are similar to mine... that darn living in the moment thing. I'm getting better at it, but still a long way to go. It's called being a Rhino! ;) As for you and Brian's ability to cook--crab dip and apple pie at the Travis's... I can see it now! Love it!
